Reducing Our Environmental Footprint 25% by 2012

At Steelcase we believe that to be successful over the long-term, a business must strike the right balance between People (human capital), Planet (natural capital) and Profit (economic benefit to our host societies). This triple bottom line approach, a balance of economic, environmental and social responsibility, requires a mix of harmony, control and vision, while continually assessing and improving the fitness of our global enterprise to enable us to compete and thrive.

Looking towards celebrating the 100th anniversary of Steelcase in 2012, in 2007 Steelcase announced an aggressive environmental strategy to reduce our environmental footprint by 25% by 2012. To achieve this, we're working hard to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, energy use and waste, measuring everything we do.

This drive to reduce our environmental impact has shaped a number of reduction initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region which include:

Sustainable packaging: Our AP packaging team is rationalizing every aspect of our packaging to reduce its use and shrink our environmental footprint.

LEED design: Our new Global Shared Service Center in Kuala Lumpur has been designed and constructed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Commercial Interiors (“LEED-CI”) requirements, and is currently in the process of acquiring certification.

ISO 14001:2004:
Our plants in Malaysia, Shenzhen and Zhaoqing are certified as ISO 14001, an international standard for environment management systems.

Environmentally intelligent design: To help expand the selection of environment friendly furniture available to our customers, we will pursue product certification for the pending BIFMA Sustainability Standard – E3.

Checking air quality: We have engaged an independent certification body, (Scientific Certification System “SCS”), to evaluate our product on indoor air quality such as VOCs and formaldehyde emission.

Creating healthier work environments: Our work on material chemistry including use of supplier MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) give us an in-depth understanding of the ingredients in our products.
Creating Product Environmental Profiles (PEP): PEP enables us to be more transparent in term of product information at each stage of a product's life cycle, contributing to the creation of clearer communication.
Reducing VOC emissions: We have implemented a long-range strategic plan to reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) to negligible levels.
